MacuMira

A New Advanced Treatment for Dry AMD


MacuMira is Canada’s first clinically proven treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration, whose goal is to improve function of the photoreceptor cells in your macula (the center of the retina). This is performed by delivering energy to the retinal cells.

The category of treatment is PHOTO-BIOMODULATION. Health Canada has approved the Macumira treatment protocol of safe, low level microcurrent technology. There is a similar Photo-Biomodulation treatment that was FDA approved in the United States using light.

What is the goal? 

 The goal of treatment is to stimulate the retina cells with energy. This is a longterm goal.

You may see improvement in vision and/or contrast sensitivity.

You can expect three outcomes:


1. Some patients notice a change, they can see more colour or recognize faces better. 

 2. Some patients don't notice a change, but we record an improvement. 

3. Some patients don't notice a change and no recorded improvement. 




Who can receive this treatment?

 This treatment was intended for patients with Dry Macular Degeneration. If you have Wet Macular Degeneration, you likely also have Dry Macular Degeneration. There are also other diseases that behave similarly to Dry Macular Degeneration which this treatment may be used for.

Many patients with geographic atrophy, dry macular degeneration and wet macular degeneration undergo 3 different treatment types concurrently. If you live in Windsor or Detroit, you have the options of receiving Wet AMD injections in Windsor, Geographic Atrophy injections in Detroit, and Dry AMD Macumira in Windsor. 


Who cannot receive this treatment?

 Patients with an implanted electronic devices and patients with eye pressure, tissue or nerve conditions cannot be treated.  Please seek advice with your specialist prior to receiving treatment.
